These rods likely lived out a full career inside lasers as a crystalline lasing medium, but eventually they were pushed too far or had dust land in the wrong spot and the ends blew off, rendering them inoperable.  In these cases the rods can sometimes be sawn and repolished, leaving pieces that are now usable for gems.  These may have also been removed during the initial production of the laser rods before they were used.  Either way, now they get to live out their retirement as gemstones! While they may have been designed for science they make amazing gems as well. They have a strong color change from blue-green to purple-pink and better yet often show flashes of both in mixed lighting when cut--the camera struggles to capture this, especially the green colors. On top of that they also show rich red fluorescence which affects their color, and the angle of lighting will also cause differences in color because this material is strongly trichroic.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAlexandrite is the color-changing chromium-bearing variety of chrysoberyl, and it has been a popular gem since the first natural deposits were discovered in Russia. Its high hardness (8.5) and durability make it suitable even for ring wear, and that along with its incredible combination of colors has made it a classic. The only thing holding it back is its rarity. Oddly enough even lab-created alexandrite is quite uncommon. Synthetic alexandrite is mostly grown for industry, where it is used in some particular high-end laser systems, and the process to grow it is very expensive. Very little is produced anymore, and even when it was produced it was uncommon on the gem market. While the original Nd YAG lasers only added Nd it was soon discovered that Ce could act as a booster to its power. This means that depending on the application you might see crystals that only have Nd or ones that are almost entirely Ce with just a pinch of Nd.  Pure Nd gives a color shifting purple-pink color while pure Ce gives a rich fluorescent yellow color--when the two are mixed you get an unusual pink, peach or golden yellow color depending on proportions that shifts depending on the lighting.  These stones also show unusual dual fluorescence, with a mix of bright yellow and pink under shortwave UV and yellow-green under both blue light and shortwave UV.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-size: 0.875rem;\"\u003eCTH YAG is used in far infrared lasers for a variety of purposes including medical procedures and meteorological measurements.  \u003c\/span\u003eLike normal Cr YAG (aka Christmas Garnet) it has a super rich green base color, but the addition of thulium quenches the fluorescence, allowing it to be absorbed by the holmium instead of released as red light. This means the base color does not have to compete with a red glow and comes out even richer and purer, giving it a very rich and vivid color.  Some of these are rods with polished ends, others are radioactive anymore but each is a small piece of history.  They have a very unusual and distinctive appearance with a green color and odd grainy structure, and their shape reflects the force that formed them.  Trinitite is no longer available for collecting so all that's available is what's in old stock and collections--we got these from a friend of ours in the mineral business.  They range from about 0.3-1g.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese were originally from the Ralph Pray collection.  In 1951, before the US Government bulldozed the site and banned further collection, he gathered Ruby Crystal, Wand or Sword Blade","description":"\u003cp\u003eThis is a bizarre crystal of ruby from an old collection of Soviet material.  I am not even sure of the growth method--it is very long and slender, and flattened, which makes me think it may have been grown by floating zone, though some sort of ultra-refined flame fusion could be possible too.  The unusual growth and lower concentration pure chromium doping makes me think it is likely laser ruby, meant to be grown for one long rod.  The base has some opaque layering which might be why it was left as a crystal.  It is absolutely stunning, with a natural handle that makes it nice to hold.  It also glows in sunlight thanks to its vivid fluorescence.  I have always wanted one of these old Soviet crystals and I'll be was accidentally produced in an old Soviet-era refinery which had very dirty, zinc-rich exhaust--as the gases cooled the zinc oxide crystallized out, slowly building up transparent gemmy crystals in a variety of colors and forms.  Some are even fluorescent, in part or in whole.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSpecimens like this are called 'anthropogenic'--not intentionally lab created but still made by human activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI remember this material being relatively abundant at gem shows back in the 90s, but it has become much scarcer as more and more disappeared into collections.  I have been trying to find some for a while now but was finding it rare and, when found, expensive.  This year we were lucky to finally find some reasonably-priced specimens at the collected by nomads from the desert in Morocco and Libya, similar to the classic northwest African meteorites.  They are incredibly cool, showing the classic branching forms you expect from lighting.  We have a few different kinds--the Libyan ones generally show finer detail and have thinner walls, while the Moroccan ones tend to be rounder and thicker with less fine details.  The Moroccan ones also also generally more stable and solid, and I suspect they have been stabilized for preservation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are just amazing little scientific rods that didn't quite make it into final production or usage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese laser rods were meant for use in solid state lasers.  They would have had light pumped into them from the side, either by a lamp or by another laser, absorbed that energy and converted it into the powerful coherent beam that lasers are known for.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePerovskite is a really unusual laser crystal!  It was grown back in the 80s in the Soviet Union, presumably as an alternative to YAG, but it really never caught on and is rarely grown today.  These rods and rod segments didn't quite make it into lasers as far as we can tell--most are offcuts with broken ends and even the complete ones lack the final coatings we'd expect.  I don't even know why they were experimenting with this unusual crystal--it has a higher density, refractive index and hardness than YAG, so perhaps its improved physical characteristics helped in some niche applications.  I doubt we'll ever be gets its color from chromium.  Styro grew these polycrystalline rubies by hitting a powdered mixture of alumina and chromia with his new, record-breaking handheld laser gun.  Melting these oxides together produces a red and strongly fluorescent ruby, however it is \u003cem\u003enot\u003c\/em\u003e a transparent single crystal - due to the quick cooling the ruby solidifies into a Laser Rods and Segments","description":"\u003cp\u003eThese are partial and complete neodymium-doped glass laser rods in a variety of different shapes and sizes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Big One is a segment of a 1m long laser rod with one polished, finished end and one broken end.  It has flame polished edges with a couple tiny chips.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe peach rod came to us labeled Nd:YAG but it is definitely glass.  It has one polished end with a couple chips cut at a slight angle, presumably to avoid back reflections and one broken end.  It has an unusual peach-orange color, suggesting maybe codoping with erbium or cerium(?).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe rod blank is an unpolished section which has two flat ends with some chipping and a matte finish all around.  It likely didn't quite make it through QC before final shaping, likely due to a single defect visible within it.  It has an amazing color change and clarity.  If this one doesn't sell I might cut a d20 from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese laser rods were meant for use in solid state lasers.  While YAG is the favored host for neodymium ions in lasers, it is challenging to grow these crystals in very large sizes.  The largest rod segment started out as a rod a meter long before FedEx did their thing to it.  Growth and processing is much easier, and rods this size can be used in things like nuclear fusion reactors, which is almost certainly what the large rod was meant for.  Even broken it is an incredible gem of science!  It shows a very strong color change from blue-purple to pink under different LEDs and pure blue under fluorescent illumination.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe don't usually sell any kind of glass, but these glass laser rods are an exception.
