It is an excellent gem, with incredible hardness (around 9.25-9.5) and greater brilliance and fire than a diamond. It is perfect for use in all kinds of jewelry.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThough it is well known in the gem world it is also highly valued in the world of science and industry. It is a semiconductor just like pure silicon but far more durable and heat-resistant, so it is used to make computer chips that need to endure high stress environments like in a car engine. Fortunately for us these uses require very exacting standards and sometimes crystals are rejected.  These crystals had growth defects and atmospheric contamination, resulting in hollow needles and carbon clusters which ruined them for semiconductor usage but left enough clean zones (after extensive trimming) to facet brilliant gems.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThough the gem world sometimes thinks of it only as a diamond stand-in I prefer to think of it as a gem all its own. These have a light gray-smoky color which cuts bright, dispersive gems.\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese stones have some inclusions, with transparent needles parallel to the C axis, small carbon spots or bubbles. These inclusions are actually very normal in moissanite to the point they're a diagnostic feature--when oriented perpendicular to the table they are not very visible, though you can get neat effects by orienting them differently as well. Needly moissanite can have a bit of extra sparkle or a pseudo-catseye.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMoissanite, aka silicon carbide, is often thought of as a diamond stand-in because of its combination of extremely high hardness and surface luster, great color range and overall brilliant sparkle.  However it is also an extremely useful crystal, and these stones were grown for use in computer chips where they act as a durable, heat-resistant replacement for pure silicon.  Fortunately for us they did not quite meet spec and I was able to get them instead and trim them for gem usage.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNote that this is the newer '4H' polytype of moissanite. This is likely the result of a mistake during growth where the argon atmosphere was lost and atmospheric nitrogen snuck and an was able to color the crystal partway through growth, though it's also possibly an intentional dopant (color in moissanite is complicated in a similar way to diamond). This gives it a very unique look--when cut the colors may blend to green or remain separate depending on the chosen orientation and cut design.  This is one of my favorite materials to cut and it comes out amazing!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNote that this is the newer '4H' polytype of moissanite.
