extra face by accident.  I faceted this stone on our CutKit™1 faceting setup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNote that the 2 came out a bit wrong during the sandblasting but it is still readable.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis ruby was grown by the Czochralski method, an advanced growth technique that produces more perfect crystals with purer chemistry than the typical stones used in jewelry.  This one is likely codoped with a little bit of iron to give it a more pure red-red color vs the slightly magenta-red of a pure chromium ruby.  I don't know for sure what this was grown grown for use in computer chips--fortunately for us it didn't quite meet spec and we were able to get our hands on it instead.  Silicon carbide is much like diamond with great durability and even when exposed to UV and then go back down with exposure to normal light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eTGG is a very cool synthetic material. It has the same structure as a natural garnet, but has a composition that would never be possible in nature. The result is a bright and very dispersive gem with optical properties similar to diamond (cubic crystal structure with a lower RI but the same dispersion as diamond), giving it incredible brilliance and fire. It is not, however, grown for gem usage at all, but because of its incredible ability to act as a Faraday rotator. Light passing through TGG in the presence of a magnetic field has its polarization rotated, which might not sound that interesting but is incredible useful for lasers. Lasers shoot out powerful beams but are very fragile, and if any of the light bounces back at them it can quickly burn them out. It is an excellent gem, with incredible hardness (around 9.25-9.5) and greater brilliance and fire than a diamond. It is perfect for use in all kinds of jewelry.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThough it is well known in the gem world it is also highly valued in the world of science and industry. It is a semiconductor just like pure silicon but far more durable and heat-resistant, so it is used to make computer chips that need to endure high stress environments like in a car engine. Fortunately for us these uses require very exacting standards and sometimes crystals are rejected.  These crystals had growth defects, resulting in hollow needles and carbon clusters which ruined them for semiconductor usage but left enough clean zones (after extensive trimming) to facet brilliant gems.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThough the gem world sometimes thinks of it only as a diamond stand-in I prefer to think of it as a gem all its own. run to produce a good crop of decently-sized rubies, topping out around 2.5mm.  Many of these are platy in form, and they have good clarity and a bright pink-red color.  These were grown in a
