These are lab grown fluorite gems set in 925 sterling silver. The design is a half-crystallized droplet, with a smooth tail merging into a faceted head, like a raindrop that froze and was suspended midair.
Due to their extremely low RI, fluorite crystals look a lot like droplets of water or ice. In addition, due to their extremely strong blue fluorescence, these stones shift from being colorless white when indoors to a icy blue outdoors. It's a very cool color change effect.
Natural fluorite has an incredible range of colors, not just purple and green but reds, yellows, blues, and more. On top of that, fluorite can have strong fluorescence - so strong that fluorescence is named after fluorite.
This Europium-doped fluorite is grown for science - these crystals are valuable because they are extremely sensitive to many kinds of radiation (not just UV), so can be used as 'scintillators' for detecting the presence of x-rays. Eu:Fluorite's glow is strong enough to change its color in direct sunlight, shifting from clear and colorless to a refreshing blue. (So blue, that it can get too bright and overwhelms the digital camera sensors, turning the photo purple!)
Fluorite has a hardness of 4 (by definition), and is a bit delicate due to multiple directions of perfect cleavage, making it difficult to facet. You will need to take extra care with these earrings, but I think the results are worth it.
