Faceted Blue Djeva Spinel Gemstones, Cut #114 Cobalt Spinel Gems

These are bright blue gems cut from old stock flame fusion cobalt spinel grown by the now-defunct Djeva corporation, categorized as "114" in their numbering system.  As our boules had two different color intensities we have divided them into lighter and darker colors.

Cobalt spinel is one of the most vividly colored lab created crystals. The Swiss Djeva corporation grew these gems to a high standard of quality for jewelry.  Unfortunately contemporary flame fusion spinel is of uneven quality and just not up to the old standards.

Czochralski-pulled cobalt spinel can be grown to ultra high purities and used in lasers as a Q switch, but this material was grown purely for use in the gem trade.  this color of spinel is sometimes found in nature as a very rare and prized gemstone, but it is never available in large sizes.
